About the
Artists:
Myrna Cumming
The year was 1985. The place was New York City. After some instruction
from a great French artist, Myrna fell in love with paint and brushes.
Starting with no knowledge at all, the ability to create a painting
was amazing to her. Her favorite subjects are seascapes and
landscapes, but she also paints other objects as well. She has been
painting on and off over the years, with a little instruction here and
there. Another of Myrna’s passions is traveling, and often times she
picks up ideas from the places she visits. Florida scenes are a
special source of inspiration to her. Myrna’s media of choice is
Acrylics. She loves oil media, but it does not love her. Lately, she
has been experimenting with water mixable oil paint, with fantastic
results.
Mary Jane Duryea
Mary
Jane was born in Tullahoma, Tennessee and raised in Forest Hills, New
York. She is the daughter of Claire Evans O’Connor, and works in a
variety of mediums. Mary Jane studied oil painting with Dr. Fred
Linden of Forest Hills, NY, portrait painting under S. Edmund
Oppenheim of the Arts Students League in New York City and art history
at Queens College, New York. She later studied textile design,
watercolors, architecture, drawing and painting at the New School for
Social Research in Manhattan. Mary Jane also attended the New York
School of Interior Design in NYC. She has lived in Lake Mary with her
husband and family for the past 33 years.
Don McCormick
In addition to being
a talented artist, Don has also taught art at a number of schools,
including George Washington University, Jacksonville University,
Florida Jr. College and Seminole Community College. His works have
been exhibited in numerous galleries and other venues in Maryland,
Virginia and Florida. His unique styles of painting have also
attracted private collectors both here and overseas. Don currently has
his studio in Longwood, Florida where is now lives.
Madeleine Mackenzie
Madeleine Mackenzie has been making art
since she could hold a crayon. Her passion for traveling to exotic
places has inspired her to create a form of Latin American folk art
called “nichos” or story boxes. Originally, nichos were used to honor
sacred objects. Mackenzie now fills them with people and animals that
nudge a memory, trigger a response, or evoke a smile. Her work has
been shown recently at various Central Florida shows including OMA’s
First Thursday, the Visual Fringe Festival, the Mennelo and Eustis
Museums’ Folk Art Festivals and the Maitland, Casselberry and Mt Dora
art centers. Madeleine was trained at the Universities of Alaska and
Texas and the Rhode Island School of Design. She currently lives in
Winter Springs.
Claire Evans O'Connor
Claire is a renowned local artist and
the daughter of Frank Evans, one of the founders of Lake Mary. She has
exhibited her work throughout Central Florida and was the 2007 post
artist for the Lake Mary Celebrates Festival. Claire was raised in
Lake Mary and returned here 25 years ago after residing in New York
for over 40 years. She studied under such talented notables as Dr.
Fred Linden and Marilyn Mayer. Her favorite medium is watercolors. She
is a member of the Florida Watercolor Society and has won numerous
awards for her work.
Frideborg Theimer Phillips
Her subjects vary, although the main body of her work
consists of landscapes. Some of her painting is done on location, but
she also uses the camera as a tool to gather reference material for
studio paintings. Born in Vienna, Austria into an artistically
talented family, she spent her early years surrounded by art and
artists. Her family came to the U.S. in the early 1950's. After
several years of teaching, marriage and family became her full time
career. In recent years Frideborg has revived her interest in painting
and is an active member of the Sanford Seminole Art Association. She
has studied with Deborah Paris, Tom Sadler, Morgan Samuel Price,
Cynthia Edmonds and Ralph Bagley. Frideborg exhibits and sells her
paintings locally at Hollerbach’s Willow Tree Cafe on First Street in
Sanford. Her work has also been sold internationally.
Dee Lee Stevens
The Arts have always been a part of
Dee’s life. She started private art lessons at the age of 10 and
discovered painting was her first love. She is currently giving back
to children in the form of teaching visual arts, K-12, in both public
and private schools. She is an active member of the Sanford Seminole
Art Association and the Seminole County Art Educators Association. Her
present artistic focus is on acrylics and her love of architecture.
She is painting historical buildings photographed in her travels. Dee
enjoys having people trying to guess the location of each building.
She exhibits her work at the Maitland Art Festival, 9 Main Street
Gallery in Titusville, Longwood Historical Society’s Art and Craft
Festival, the Art House of Casselberry, Bank of America in Lake
Forest, Art’s Alive of Seminole County, Seminole Community College‘s
Art Gallery, Central Florida Fair, Sanford Seminole Art Association’s
Annual Art Shows and the Sanford Welcome Center.
